RCI 060 · Coverage-gap audit

The packs robots actually run on are not here yet.

Humanoids and larger mobile platforms are built around 48 V-class system packs, their chargers, distribution and hot-swap infrastructure. RCI’s power layer currently holds fourteen records dominated by removable smart packs from the portable-instrument world. Useful records—wrong center of gravity. An external reviewer said so; the data agrees.

The skew, stated precisely

Eight of the fourteen records are removable smart lithium-ion packs from RRC Power Solutions, Inspired Energy and Ultralife—SMBus-class packs in the 14.4 V/98 Wh envelope designed for medical carts, instruments and portable equipment. Three are bare Molicel 21700 cells, which are genuine robot building blocks but only inputs to a pack, not a pack. The remainder: one battery-monitoring IC, one isolated DC-DC module, one small 2S1P pack. Zero records are 48 V-class system packs; zero are chargers; zero are power-distribution units, protection boards above IC level, or hot-swap docks.

The smart-pack records entered the catalog for a defensible reason—these vendors publish complete per-SKU electrical, certification and lifecycle documentation, and the packs appear as drop-in candidates in shared robot BOMs. But the selection again followed documentation availability rather than robot-power reality: the inclusion bias of RCI 061, visible in a second category.

What a robot power chain needs on record

  • 48 V-class system packs with condition-preserved discharge boundaries: continuous versus pulse current with time limits, temperature derating, and the certification basis (UN 38.3, IEC 62133 or UL 2271) as cited documents, not badges.
  • Charge infrastructure: chargers and docks matched to specific packs, with communication protocol and termination behavior on record.
  • Distribution and protection: PDUs, contactors, precharge circuits and E-stop paths—the layer where the Robot System Index already records unknowns it cannot yet close.
  • Pack-to-robot evidence: which named platforms actually run which named packs. RCI’s battery-compatibility audit found zero complete drop-in evidence packages; that number should move.

Why 48 V coverage is hard to index honestly

Most humanoid and quadruped system packs are proprietary, undocumented in public, or specified only at the marketing level—the exact opacity an independent index exists to record. Where a datasheet-grade source does not exist, the honest record is a documentation-gap entry that states what the vendor does not publish, rather than a thin page recycling a spec table. That record type is being introduced under RCI 061, and this layer is where it will be used first. Until then, fourteen well-bounded records and a plainly stated gap beat forty thin ones.
